Self-Control Breeds Peace

Galatians 5:22-23, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." (KJV)

Galatians 5:22-23, "But the fruit that the Spirit produces in a person’s life is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these kinds of things." (ERV)

Galatians 5:22-23, " But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely." (The Message)

Temperance.

According to the dictionary, 'temperance' is described as, "moderation or self-restraint in action, statement, etc.; self-control. habitual moderation in the indulgence of a natural appetite or passion, especially in the use of alcoholic liquors." The thesaurus uses synonyms such as "constraint; control; discretion; moderation; restraint; self-control; sobriety" to describe the word 'temperance.'

Self-Control.

Self-control is needed in many areas of our lives. When I first read through Galatians 5:23, I immediately thought of our tempers and how we need to learn to exercise control over those; however, after reading the definition of what temperance truly is and reading more of His Word- He has opened my eyes to so many areas we need to exercise self-control. It is something we have to be dedicated to- dedicated to praying about it, putting it at the forefront of our minds.

Proverbs 25:28 states, "Like a conquered city with no walls, so is a man who has no self-control." (The Voice)

A conquered city with no walls means that the area is no longer what it once was. Where once, families felt safe inside those walls, sleeping peacefully at night, organization, everything running on a schedule-- now, the city was being run by new occupants, taking what they want, ruining lives, taking away the peace and safeness they once felt. This is what it is like when we have zero self-control. We let other things take over our lives- our hearts- our spirits- and eventually, they are no longer our own.

I've been there. I know it seems like I say that a lot, but trust me when I say- I've been there. I have let so much junk take over my heart and soul. It is true- when you give the devil an inch, he will take a mile. When you start turning your mind to things it shouldn't be thinking about- when you start putting things before your eyes that you shouldn't be watching- when you start discussing things that are inappropriate- when you start drinking heavily- when you start not caring about others..... he destroys everything around you because you no longer have walls around your city- your heart and soul.

The Message states, "A person without self-control is like a house with its doors and windows knocked out." (Proverbs 25:28)

We are no longer safe. Safe from the tricks, deception, lies, and darts of the enemy. The more we lose self-control, the greater the ability for those dangerous things like anger, wrath, bitterness, lust, jealousy, fear, arrogance, selfishness, etc. to sneak in. There's nothing keeping them out!

Self-Control Breeds Godliness.

2 Peter 1:5-9 states, "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins."

Paul instructs us to add faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love to our lives. If we have these qualities and keep working on them- they will keep us from being ineffective in this life. If we do not have these qualities, we are only seeing what is in front of us as opposed to the bigger picture. We forget that we are washed and cleansed by His blood!

When we exercise self-control, the only thing it can breed is godliness. The more we control the things that can tear our spirit down- the closer we get to Him- and there is less room for those bad things to come in to our soul.

I'll speak on a personal level here- I've told my story over and over again- in 5 days, it will be 2 months since I've had an alcoholic beverage. I asked God to help me with my drinking because it was an obsession for me. It began to take over my life. It was all I could think about. I waited all day for my husband to call me and tell me he was on his way home from work so I could pour a glass of wine. I would have 4-5 glasses a night just to be able to relax and fall asleep. I would drink to the point of passing out- and this was just a Wednesday night. I became addicted to the feeling- the feeling of no anxiety when I was buzzing. But you know what- when I woke up in the morning- anxiety was still there. Hypochondria was still killing me. I was listening to my children tell me how scared they were the night before because 'Mommy passed out by the door and wouldn't get up.' I was losing my family. My lack of self-control was breeding ungodliness. My lack of self-control was breeding a terrible environment for my family. My lack of self-control was opening the door for horrible things to enter in to my spirit. My lack of self-control was tearing down all the walls God had built for years. My lack of self-control was causing me to justify sins.

My lack of self-control was destroying my life.

Until Jesus Christ came to my rescue.

Self-Control Breeds Peace.

Think about how many times we don't exercise self-control.... and think about how many moments and people are destroyed because of this.

Lack of self-control in an argument- destroy/hurt a loved one.
Lack of self-control with alcohol- chances are you say things you do not mean
Lack of self-control with eating- you feel sick within
Lack of self-control with your mind- you let fear, anger, wrath in and it begins destroying your soul
Lack off self-control in relationships- you may end up hurting someone you truly care about because you cannot control yourself
Lack of self-control with our words- gossip sneaks in and we tear down others

Self-control is not meant to be something that 'steals your fun'... self-control is meant to release GOOD things in to your life. It builds a wall around your soul and keeps the things that want to destroy your heart-- those around you-- your life.

Self-control breeds peace in all areas of your life.

Women- We are Called to have Self-Control As Well.

For some reason growing up, every time I thought about 'self-control' I immediately thought about tempers- anger- wrath. I'm not sure why I always equated this scripture with that, but it was the first thing that came to my mind when I thought of self-control. I quickly thought about anger.

In 1 Timothy 3, Paul addresses the church concerning our outward appearance vs. what is inside our heart. He longed for these men and women to put aside what someone looked like on the outside and pay attention to their true character. Paul even addressed this women in 1 Timothy 3:11. Paul writes:

"Again the same applies to women in key positions; they should also be dignified, not backstabbing gossips but self-controlled and faithful to the core." (The Voice)

"Wives, too, must be worthy of respect, not slanderers, self-controlled, faithful in everything." (HCSB)

"In the same way, the women must have the respect of other people. They must not be women who repeat evil gossip about other people. They must have self-control and be women who can be trusted in everything." (ICB)

"In the same way, women must be respected by others. They must not speak evil of others. They must be self-controlled and trustworthy in everything." (NCV)

Alright, Lord. I'll let You convict me right now-- I know I need it.

Women, we have been called by God to be examples- to our children, our families, our friends, our worlds. The first step to being this example is by exercising self-control. We can be tools- the key- to helping others in this life........ but so many times lack of temperance holds us back from that.

I can't tell you how many times my lack of self-control (especially when it comes to my mind) steals my peace- how many times I've let fear creep in at the store, in public, etc. when God COULD have used me to reach someone else, BUT my fear was too great. I couldn't focus on anything but my anxiety.

So, He has shifted my perspective. As I'm driving to the store, He reminds me: pray for your spirit, Alyssa. That it is open to those in need. So, instead of thinking about how scared and nervous I am, He helps me to pray. "Jesus, I can't do this alone. I ask that You put someone in my path today that needs You. That needs a testimony of Your goodness. I pray that You would push my anxiety aside so that I can be used by You. I can't be an example if I'm bound by fear. Release it today, Jesus. Help me to exercise self-control. Help me to put all my thoughts under Your subjection. In Your holy and precious name, Amen."

That's all self-control. Putting every thought, every action- under His subjection. What would Jesus think about my thoughts?. What would He think about what I'm preparing to do? Does it line up with His Word? Are my words getting ready to destroy someone? Will my actions produce horrible consequences?

Erwin Raphael McManus stated, "Behind real freedom there lies discipline."

God, we need freedom in our lives today. True freedom. Help us to discipline our lives, Jesus. Help us to guard our hearts and spirits from anything not like You.  Help us to subject our actions and words to YOUR Word. I pray over our families today Lord- that we guard them- that we guard their eyes, ears, and hearts. I pray that discipline would build a wall around our lives that keeps the tools of the enemy out and Your goodness in. We love You lamb of God! Thank You for all You do for us. In Jesus name, Amen.

... after you see that beauty, He wants you to look around at the world and see the hurting.

Meekness.

According to the dictionary, meekness is described as, "humbly patient or docile, as under provocation from others, overly submissive or compliant; forbearing; yielding; pacific; calm; soft."

The word 'meek' is used 29 times in the Bible (KJV) and not once in those 29 times is meekness seen as a weak, useless quality. I know this is the common misconception. I saw a quote on Pinterest that stated, "Being meak does not mean weakness but it does mean behaving with goodness and kindness, showing strength, serenity, healthy self-worth, and self-control." [Elder Ulisses Soares]

Being Humble Does Not Mean Having No Self Esteem

Having a humble, meek spirit does not mean that you have zero or low self-esteem. It is actually quite the opposite. As the quote above stated- having a humble spirit means you have a healthy self-worth. Meekness is knowing God designed you perfectly, but you were placed on this earth for His work.

You can look in the mirror and see beauty. He longs for you to. He wants you to see the masterpiece He created. But after you see that beauty, He wants you to look around at the world and see the hurting.

We are Called to Seek Meekness.

According to Zephaniah 2:3, "Zephaniah writes, "Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger."

Colossians 3:8-9, 12 states, "But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds....... Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering."

1 Timothy 6:10-11 says, " For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness."

Over and over again, God asks us to lay aside the sins and weight of the world. He asks us to remove anger, filthy communication, lying, the love of money.... and He asks us multiple times to put on meekness, a humble spirit, mercy, godliness, faith, love, and patience.

He calls to be meek.

And He gives us a promise with that calling.

Matthew 5:5, "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth."

Psalms 22:26, "The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live for ever."

Psalms 37:11, "But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace."

Psalms 149:4, "For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation."

Isaiah 29:19, "The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel."

He reiterates His promises for us over and over again in the Word of God. We are called to be meek-- the meek shall inherit the earth.

What Kind of Spirit Do We Have?

This is the question I keep asking myself as I write this blog.

What kind of spirit do I have?

I know personally, I have a judgmental, rough spirit at times. I see what I want/need from a situation, how I would act in a certain scenario... and I judge. I hold grudges. I have a hard time letting things go. I live in a world of fairness, not mercy.

So, when I read these verses today, God convicted me.

Galatians 6:1 states, "Brothers, someone in your group might do something wrong. You who are spiritual should go to him and help make him right again. You should do this in a gentle way. But be careful! You might be tempted to sin, too." (ICB)

You should do this in a GENTLE way. A MEEK way.

How many times do I see someone doing something wrong and immediately judge them? It is even worse that I point a finger-- when I've probably done worse.

One thing God keeps reminding me about others is this-- we don't know what they have endured or are enduring. We have no idea. Even with our friends. We might think we know situations, but we don't truly know them in their fullness. It is unhealthy for us to judge someone-- we must come to them in mercy, forgiveness, love, compassion, and meekness.

Mother Teresa once stated, "If you judge people you have no time to love them."

and Gordon B. Hinckley wrote, "Being humble means recognizing that we are not here to see how important we can become, but to see how much of a difference we can make in the lives of others."

If we are consistently rude- consistently spiteful- consistently judgmental- consistently making harsh opinions about someone-- how can we make a GOOD difference in the lives of others?

"Be the person that makes others feel special. Be known for your kindness and your grace."

"True confidence manifests as kindness. Whereas unacknowledged insecurity becomes arrogance." [Waylon H. Lewis]

Jesus, help us to understand the greatness and beauty in being humble, meek, and kind. You have called us to a life of service. Help us to follow that with love and thankfulness. Help us to not see ourselves as weak- but to understand that there is strength in having a gentle spirit. You have not called us to be doormats- but to be doors- which when people see and pass through, will come closer to You. Help us to emit ALL of who You are! Goodness, gentleness, meekness, love, faith, peace. Thank You for all You do for us! We love You, Jesus. Amen.

Our past does not have to define who we are in the future, but overcoming our past can show others what their future CAN look like.

Faith.

According to the dictionary, 'faith' is described as, "belief that is not based on proof; belief in God or in the teachings of religion; the obligation of loyalty or fidelity to a person, promise, engagement, etc."

God has called us to a life of faith according to Galatians. He has called us to believe in His Word, even when we don't have the proof. He has called us to believe in Him, even when we might not understand what He is doing at the time.

One thing I always faced growing up was the question of 'How can you believe in God when you can't see Him.' You wouldn't believe how many people questioned this in my lifetime. It is hard to grasp that we fully trust in someone we have not seen with our own eyes.

Hebrews 11:1, 3 states, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen....Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." (KJV)

Hebrews 11:1, 3- "Faith is the assurance of things you have hoped for, the absolute conviction that there are realities you’ve never seen... Through faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God; everything we now see was fashioned from that which is invisible." (Voice)

We believe because of faith. I believe in Jesus Christ because even though I can't see Him, I can feel Him moving in every aspect of my life. Even at my lowest point in this life, I never once doubted that God existed because I knew what I felt when I prayed to Him. I knew how it felt for Him to wrap His arms around you. And now that He has been leading me on a journey of restoring my relationship with Him, I can feel His presence even stronger- the first word of a prayer that comes out of my mouth- one mention of His name. And that is all the proof I need to know that He is with me, listening to me, talking to me, loving me.

Hebrews 11:6 states, "Without faith no one can please God because the one coming to God must believe He exists, and He rewards those who come seeking." (Voice)

If you want your faith in God renewed, read Hebrews chapter 11 completely. It will bless your soul. It gives numerous accounts of immense faith in the biblical times. For most, faith was all they had left. Sometimes God has to strip us down to where that's all we have left to hold on to. I've been there....

Faith healed a great deal of people in Biblical times. The knowledge that Jesus Christ could do anything within His Will if we only asked. In Matthew chapter 9, we read about a woman who had been sick with an issue of blood for 12 years. She had spent all her money- lost a lot of time- just trying to find someone to heal her. But she knew that if she could just get to Jesus just one time and touch Him, she would be healed. And she did just that. Jesus said, 'Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole.'

Imagine what we could do in this world with this kind of faith.

There are countless accounts in the Bible where faith made someone whole. Sicknesses healed, the dead raised, the blind were able to see, the lame could walk. All because of FAITH.

We are called to have faith in Jesus Christ- faith that He will act in His time, faith that He can heal, faith that He will heal, faith that He will listen to our prayers, faith that He will not leave us or forsake us...

Our relationship with Him is based on faith and this must be renewed every single day. Trusting Him, communicating with Him, leaning on Him...

"If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it."

"Prayer is bringing your wishes and worries to God. Faith is leaving them there."

"Faith does not make things easy. It makes them possible!"

"To trust God in the light, that is nothing but to trust Him in the dark...  that's faith." [C.H. Spurgeon]

"You have been assigned this mountain to show others that it can be moved."

Our faith can change our life..

And it can change other's lives as well.

I hate anxiety.

I hate it with a passion.

But God has been helping me shift my focus from resenting it to overcoming it so that by my testimony, others can come to know Jesus Christ and the peace He gives.

"There is an appropriate way to use your story, not as an excuse but as a testimony to God's ability to free you from your past." [Andy Stanley]

I have zero excuses for my past. I don't know why certain things have happened, I don't know why I did certain things-- BUT, I do know that God has taken those terrible things and has built a foundation of LOVE FOR HIM from the ground up with them!!!

Our past does not have to define who we are in the future, but overcoming our past can show others what their future CAN look like.

I pray to God every single day that others will see the changes in my life-- and that they will trust God to do the same thing for them. I'm telling you- if He can do it for me, He can do it for anyone.

Are you going through a hard time right now? Does your faith need a refresher? Do you feel like you've gone too far in your past to be used by God?

Talk to Him today.

Jesus, I ask that you give us the faith that moves mountains. I ask that You help us to remember You are in every situation- every circumstance- even when we cannot see You. Help us to remember that You are good- and You work everything out for our good. You are faithful. You are merciful. Jesus, I ask that you shift our focus from our problems today to Your Word. You promised to comfort us and be there for us in every situation. Help us to rest in that today.

Psalms 33:4 states, "For the word of the Eternal is perfect and true; His actions are always faithful and right." (Voice)

Psalms 37:3 states, "Believe in the Eternal, and do what is good— live in the land He provides; roam, and rest in God’s faithfulness." (Voice)

God is faithful. It might not FEEL like it some days, but we cannot rest on our emotions-- we have to rest in His Word. He is faithful-- and He will be there for you every step of this journey.

Let your faith in Him be renewed today. Let Him give you rest.

August 13th Journal Prompt: Anger.

The journal prompt of the day is: How do you deal with your anger? I bottle a lot of my emotions up inside. If I feel anger- it may show on...
